Background | Objectives | Vision | Management | The Brand |
The Society is working for the upliftment of traditional weavers and artisan communities of Kullu and tribal districts of Kinnaur and Lahoul & Spiti, Chamba, Kashmir and indigenous nomads of Rupsho & Ngari Tibetan refugees of Changthang. These weaving and artisan communities either work as weavers/ craftpersons or as herds people. They subsist on bare minimum wages due to exploitative trade practices by traders and middlemen. They live in shanty hamlets and literacy and hygiene are not priority for them. Majority of them live below poverty line. It is this background, which gives this society an inspiration to work for their empowerment so these communities earn their livelihood with dignity. The promoters and Executive Body Members have long been in this business of wool trade between nomads of Changthang and Rudok, district of western Tibet with woollen spinning mills of Dhariwal and Amritsar in Punjab. This trade continued till Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1962. Cunnigham, who had task of mapping the boundary between Spiti& Ladakh, identified a route over the Pangpo-la down to Tso Morari, which he was sure must be used by wool traders between the western Tibetan district of Rudok and Lahoul. With this background of centuries in this business practice, the Executive Body envisioned a respectful and dignified livelihood means for the Pashm, Yak Pashm and Byang Tsam (sheep wool) growers of Rupsho (Changthang) & Gaddi shepherds and tribal weavers of Kinnaur, Lahoul & Spiti, Chamba, Kullu, Kashmir and Nomads in the Western Himalayas. |
